2013 Ford Escape Recalled for Fuel Leaks and Engine Fires

Ford has announced a recall on select 2013 Escape models with a manufacturing date between October 5, 2011 and July 11, 2012. The affected vehicles may have fuel lines that may have been installed incorrectly when repaired under a prior recall, NHTSA 12V-336, as well as overheating in the engine cylinder head that could cause cracks, allowing oil to leak.

In regards to the fuel leaks, if the engine compartment fuel line was installed incorrectly, it could chafe and eventually begin to leak fuel. A leak in the presence of an ignition source could cause a fire.

Looking at the overheating engines, if leaking engine oil came into contact with a hot engine surface, it could potentially result in an engine compartment fire. If this were to happen while driving, the risk to the driver and potential passengers would increase.

Ford will begin to notify owners of the affected vehicles, and the recalls are expected to start on January 23, 2014. Dealers will inspect the engine compartment fuel line, and replace it if necessary in the Escape models affected by the fuel leaks. Dealers will also modify the engine shielding, cooling, and control systems in the Escape models affected by overheating.
